"COLLABORATION is KEY"
Pride is in my heart this morning. WHY? I was privileged to attend one of the most empowering events in my 35 years of community service. I had prepared a public comment for last evenings Safety Summit which I am sharing with my viewing audience today.
Safety Summit
March 25, 2010
From: Jean C. Jacobs
Good Evening: Mr. President, Community Leaders, Members of the Common Council and Community members in attendance this evening:
I stand here before you this evening first and foremost to thank Alderman Thomas Hoffay for creating this public safety forum so we as a community can better identify the safety concerns and arrive at solutions together.
As a life long resident born and raised here and my children I take great pride in my public servant participation and speaking before you this evening:
My Theme
“Collaboration is Key”
Tonight we are here to gain the views and potential solutions and to strengthen relationships to ensure a productive approach to Safety in our Community.
This evening will provide an opportunity to develop and share understanding of the issues surrounding City safety with a clear exchange of views in providing an Action Plan for the future.
Some considerations include the fact that the cycle of violence affects us all and that cycle is one that needs to be confronted with change and positivity. We must seek to provide every individual the optimal experience free from violence inflicted upon them.
I am stressing the need for law enforcement officials, city officials, community groups and organizations, school officials and parents to work and partner with children and youth in our community to exchange ideas and how to best prevent violence, and improve safety within our community. By sharing this information here this evening we can SAVE LIVES.
The time for being upset is behind us and it's best to go forward together. Community Involvement is central to the prevention, intervention and suppression programs that our city employs. Tonight is a unique opportunity for residents to think broadly about strategies for addressing some of the most serious issues that face our neighborhoods. If you want to keep your neighborhoods safe, take this advice and never ever give up. Crime will never go away completely but we can intervene, we can prevent it, and we can reduce it.
In closing, I suggest as we move forward together, that in the future we break up in action groups designed to maximize partnerships to address public safety concerns.
Thank you for your time.

Thank you for coming last night. I appreciate your comments very much. I will also note that you stayed to the end of a very long meeting. Let's talk about how we build a better attended Ward meeting.

The meeting was okay. It was not the best thing ever to come along as you seem to think. You are showing great political naivety.
I have read your blog and listened to your show on 23. I note that you are getting candidates for the school board. I think you should consider running for the board. I think your chances are much better than running for Alderman, Legislator, or anything citywide.
Run for the school board so you can take advantage of the support you have outside the city. A run in the city by a Republican is a fool's errand except perhaps against Sottile who is very unpopular.
Don't run against him because there are too many people in that race already, With Hoyt, Cahill, and Polacco already in the race, your chances would be good as a spoiler, but not more.
Reaching out and creating that powerful team called UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY is what I am all about. I would consider it a privilege to work with you Jen and together we can build a better attended Ward meeting.
Once again you are praising Democrats. Why don't you just join their party?

Let me begin by stating I respect your comments and I will respond. First and foremost I have served my community as a LEADER in the KSCD. I devoted 30 years of my time on every committee, more than you can begin to imagine. The highlight of my community service of course, was becoming a BOE trustee and BOE President.I am extremely connected to my community and far from NAIVE as you mention in your comment.
I can become a candidate for MAYOR and who are you to decide my political future. I respect Mayor James Sottile considerably and if I am the best candidate for MAYOR then it is up to me to prove to my public how I can change City Government. My platform will not attack the Mayor but create a PLATFORM FOR CHANGE. This is how you win an election. I have a lifetime vested in my community and I am ready for any challenge. I am not a SPOILER! I am a WINNER!!
I have been and always will be a VOICE FOR THE PEOPLE.

I am sorry that you feel this way so let's have a lesson in democracy working together for the betterment of your community and the people. Crossing over party lines to work for the people speaks volumes to the citizens of the City of Kingston. You are most narrow minded to even make such a statement. This is why we are failing considerably because we behave like chldren and do not realize the importance of working together for the people. Also remember Ms. Fuentes is reaching out to me as well. This is how your restore a sense of HOPE to the people by proving to them that we can all work together. We can agree to disagree but the BOTTOM LINE IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE.
I ask you this question: Did the City of Kingston Republican Committee endorse Democrats in the 2009 election????
Ms. Jacobs I just read that you may consider running for MAYOR in 2011. I must say that with all of your experience and years of dedication to your community you would be an excellent candidate. I wish you the very best and support your campaign for MAYOR if you decide to run.
MAYOR JEAN JACOBS. I JUST LOVE THE SOUND OF THIS. SHE IS AN EXCELLENT CANDIDATE. PROVE ME WRONG?
You go girl..Since when is it a crime to network with the other parties? Must have been Richard Cahill or one of his coherts blasting you for agreeing with a democrat. And yes, indeed, the City Republican Committee endorsed several democrats for aldermatic posts because they were the best for the job, but that in itself is okay? Separate standards, separate rules because it suits certain individuals is ridiculous. For the betterment of the community, making a difference..Where do I sign up?
The Safety Meeting was too long. Each speaker on the agenda should have been limited to 10 minutes. You lose your audience after that. However, all in all, the meeting was informative and I will be walking my own Ward handing out flyers for the next Neighborhood Safety meeting.
Hi I am a little new to this blogging but I have been surfing the BLOGS and this one stood out JACOBS LIVE. WOW!!! so much effort and you really have a MISSION that matters. Most impressive. Have you ever considered running for MAYOR in your city? You should really consider this because you speak the words of knowledge, trust, truth and love of your community. You appear to be a very powerful woman. Good Luck
